The newly launched Disk Pro 2 Ultra transcends the conventional definition of a portable solid-state drive (SSD), ingeniously integrating a 4K HDMI dock and a comprehensive USB-C hub into a remarkably compact form factor. This all-in-one accessory functions as a veritable Swiss Army knife for the digital nomad, catering to laptops, tablets, smartphones, gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck, and even game consoles such as the Nintendo Switch and its anticipated successor, the Switch 2.
What truly sets the Disk Pro 2 Ultra apart is its thoughtful design, which includes built-in magnets compatible with the MagSafe ecosystem. This allows the device to securely attach to the back of an iPhone, Google Pixel, or any other compatible device, with an included magnetic ring providing universal adhesion. The user has the option to enable or disable this fan, offering a balance between performance and acoustics. When the fan is engaged at its highest setting, the temperature difference felt on the device’s metal casing after intensive use was noticeable, indicating its effectiveness in dissipating heat. While the performance difference in transfer speeds between the fan being on or off was marginal (a matter of seconds over a multi-gigabyte transfer), the thermal management is crucial for preventing performance throttling and ensuring the longevity of the SSD.
A critical consideration for potential buyers lies in the power requirements and limitations of the Disk Pro 2 Ultra. Sharge offers two variants: the "Ultra" model, which requires a minimum of 1.5W of USB-C bus power, and a "Lite" version. The Lite model draws more power, necessitated by its more demanding internal chips, and supports 4K60 output over HDMI 2.0, as opposed to the Ultra’s 4K144 over HDMI 2.1. For the Ultra model, Sharge states that it can only route approximately 3W of power from the host device (laptop or phone) to the connected SSD. Alternatively, users could opt for a lower-power NVMe SSD when populating the enclosure, though finding high-performance SSDs that operate within such strict power envelopes can be challenging.
Compatibility with gaming consoles, specifically the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, presents another layer of nuance. While the HDMI docking functionality works for both consoles, Nintendo’s devices have a specific requirement for an external power source to initiate docking. Sharge is actively refining the firmware to optimize this interaction, but currently, an 85W or higher USB-C PD charger is recommended for optimal Switch 2 performance. Users may experience a brief delay before the consoles appear on the connected display, a common characteristic of some third-party docking solutions.
